How to Properly Check Your Water Meter for Leaks

Checking your water meter regularly can help identify potential leaks and save you from costly water bills.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to ensure your meter is working properly and there are no hidden leaks:

  1. Stop Using Water Indoors

    • Make sure no water is being used inside or outside your home. This includes turning off dishwashers, washing machines, showers, faucets, and checking that no toilets are running.
  2. Locate Your Water Meter

    • Head to your water meter, usually located near the curb in front of your home.
  3. Check the Meter Dial

    • Once you’re sure no water is being used, look at the meter dial. If the dial is spinning or the digital readout is increasing, this could indicate a leak somewhere in your home or yard.
  4. Act Fast if You Spot Movement

    • If you notice the meter is moving even though no water is being used, you may have a leak. It’s important to investigate further or call a professional plumber to avoid water damage and high bills.

Regularly checking your water meter is a simple but effective way to catch leaks early and conserve water.
